How to fit your bicycle tire: a simple guide

Mounting a tire to your bike rim is easier than you think! Follow these steps for a smooth ride without bumps or surprises.

What do you need?

Your new outer tire
An inner tube (if you replace that too)
Tire levers (usually two)
A bicycle pump
Talcum powder (optional, but recommended)
A little soapy water (optional)

Step-by-step plan:

Prepare the inner tube: Inflate the inner tube very slightly, just enough so that it is round and not flat.
Talcum powder (optional but helpful): Apply some talcum powder to the inside of the tire. This prevents the tube from sticking and reduces the risk of punctures.
Installing the first side of the tire: Place one side of the tire in the rim. Start opposite the valve and work your way in both directions until the tire is fully seated in the rim.
Installing the inner tube: Now insert the inner tube's valve through the valve hole in the rim. Carefully work the rest of the inner tube into the tire. Make sure the inner tube isn't twisted anywhere.
Installing the second side of the tire: This is the trickiest part. Start at the valve again. Press the edge of the tire over the rim with your thumbs. Work slowly around, a little at a time.
- Tip for the final stretch: If it gets difficult, push the already-mounted parts of the tire deeper into the "groove" of the rim (the lowest point). This will create more clearance on the side you still need to mount. If necessary, use your tire levers to lever the last bit over, but be careful not to damage the inner tube!
Check for 'bumps': Before you fully inflate the tire, this is crucial:
- Check the seating: Look along both sides of the tire and the rim. Do you see a line or marking on the tire that runs evenly along the rim flange? It should be the same distance from the rim everywhere. If that line disappears deeper into the rim or protrudes further, the tire is not seated properly.
- The soap and water trick: You can spray a little soapy water (dishwashing liquid) on the edges of the tire where it meets the rim. This helps the tire slide into place better when you inflate it.
Inflate and center:
- Now slowly inflate the tire, in small steps.
- Press and check: Inflate the tire slightly, then recheck the "line" on the tire to see if it sits evenly on the rim. Also squeeze the tire and push it back and forth a bit. If you notice the tire isn't seated properly, let out some air and try to push the tire into position with your hands. Sometimes it helps to "pop" the tire briefly by pumping it up quickly so it snaps into place.
- Repeat this until the band fits perfectly.
- Inflate the tire to the recommended pressure (usually printed on the sidewall of the tire).

By following these steps carefully, you can install your bicycle tire tightly and safely, ready for many kilometers!
